Fermax VEO vs VEO XS vs VEO XL monitors: which to choose?

📅 June 2026 ✍️ Fermax Technical Service Valencia ⏱ 8 min read

The VEO range is Fermax's most widely installed family of video intercom monitors, but between the classic VEO, the compact VEO XS and the large 7-inch VEO XL there are differences worth knowing before you decide. Here's what we've learnt from installing them every day in Valencia.

What each monitor in the VEO range offers

All three monitors share the essentials: Fermax's DUOX Plus technology (two non-polarised wires), colour image, door release and a design that fits any hallway. The differences lie in screen size, how you talk and connectivity:

📞 VEO — the classic with handset
4.3" screen and a traditional handset (with a hands-free option depending on the version). Perfect for anyone coming from an old-style door phone who wants the same feel, but with an image. Simple, robust and the cheapest in the range.
🖐️ VEO XS — compact hands-free
The same 4.3" screen in an ultra-slim body with no handset: you talk and listen at the press of a button. It takes up minimal wall space and comes in a WiFi version compatible with the Fermax Blue app.
🖥️ VEO XL — large 7" screen
Hands-free with a 7-inch screen: the image from the entrance appears at twice the size. Ideal for elderly people or anyone who simply wants to see in full detail who's calling. Also available in a WiFi version.
💡 Key fact: all three monitors run on DUOX Plus, Fermax's two-wire digital system. If your building already has DUOX Plus, any of them can be installed using the existing wiring, with no building work.

The WiFi versions (VEO XS WiFi and VEO XL WiFi) add what people ask for most these days: call forwarding to your mobile with the Fermax Blue app, so you can answer the door even when you're not at home. If you want to know everything the app can do, we cover it in our Fermax Blue video intercom guide.

Which one suits you best

After hundreds of installations across Valencia, these are the criteria we usually apply when recommending one or the other:

  • For elderly people → VEO XL. The 7" screen makes all the difference: you can see perfectly who's calling without leaning in, the buttons are clear and the audio is powerful. It's the one we install most often in parents' and grandparents' homes.
  • For small flats or tight hallways → VEO XS. Its ultra-slim profile barely protrudes from the wall, and hands-free operation means no cables or handsets dangling.
  • For answering from your phone → the WiFi versions. VEO XS WiFi or VEO XL WiFi with the Fermax Blue app: essential for second homes, holiday lets or if you spend long hours away.
  • For those who prefer the familiar → VEO with handset. Some people simply feel more comfortable picking up: the classic VEO offers the traditional door-phone experience with the added benefit of an image.
  • For communities upgrading together → mix and match per flat. One advantage of DUOX Plus: each neighbour can choose their own monitor (VEO, XS or XL) on the same shared installation.
Technician's tip: if you're torn between the XS and the XL, think about who'll be using it daily five years from now. The price difference between the two is small compared with the comfort of the large screen, and it's a unit you'll have on the wall for 15 or 20 years.

Installation, compatibility and guide prices

Installing a VEO monitor in a building that already runs DUOX Plus is quick: the terminal is replaced, the flat is programmed and that's it — usually in a single visit. If your building has an older system (analogue 4+N or VDS), each case needs assessing: sometimes a compatible monitor exists, and other times it makes more sense to convert to DUOX Plus reusing the wiring. If you're not sure which system you have, start with our guide on replacing your intercom with a video intercom.

As a price guide with installation included in Valencia:

  • VEO 4.3": from around €250-400 installed.
