Why your intercom isn't ringing: the 6 most common causes
An intercom that stops ringing is one of the most frequent faults we deal with in Valencia. The good news: in most cases the repair is quick and inexpensive. These are the causes we see most often:
- Faulty ringer or buzzer: the phone receives the call but the component that produces the sound is broken or disconnected.
- Volume switched off: many Fermax monitors and handsets have a "do not disturb" switch or volume wheel that gets moved accidentally when hanging up.
- Handset not properly hung up: if the phone isn't seated correctly, the system reads it as "busy" and won't ring.
- Deteriorated wiring: loose wires, oxidised joints or cables damaged by building work or damp cut off the call signal.
- Worn street-panel push button: your flat's button at the entrance is corroded or broken and doesn't send the call.
- Faulty power supply: if it doesn't ring in any flat in the building, the most likely culprit is the main power supply unit.
What you can check yourself before calling a technician
Before requesting a visit, spend two minutes on these simple checks. No tools needed, and they sometimes solve the problem instantly:
- Make sure the handset is properly hung up on its cradle and nothing is pressing against it.
- Find the volume wheel or switch on the side or bottom of the unit and check it isn't at minimum or in silent mode.
- Ask someone to call from the entrance while you listen closely: a very faint click means the ringer is failing.
- Ask a neighbour whether their intercom works: if it doesn't ring in other flats either, the fault is in the communal system.
- Check whether the door release works: that tells you whether power is reaching your handset.
Symptom and likely origin of the fault
This guide table helps you locate the source of the fault based on what you observe at home:
| Symptom | Likely origin |
|---|---|
| Doesn't ring but opens the door | Handset ringer |
| Doesn't ring or open | Wiring or handset |
| Doesn't ring anywhere in the building | Power supply |
| Rings faintly or distorted | Worn buzzer |
| Only your flat fails from the entrance | Panel push button |
| Fails intermittently | Loose joint or wire |
In digital Fermax systems (VDS or DUOX) it can also be a flat-programming issue, which a certified technician solves by reprogramming the unit.
Repair or replace the intercom?
It depends on the age of the unit, the availability of spare parts and the overall condition of the installation:

Frequently asked questions
If the door release works but the phone doesn't ring, the problem is most likely the phone's internal ringer or the call wire. The installation has power, but the call signal isn't arriving or the buzzer is faulty. A technician can determine whether to repair or replace the handset.
It depends on the cause: from a simple adjustment of the push button or ringer to replacing the handset or the power supply. We always provide a free, no-obligation quote before starting. You'll find guide prices in our article on door entry system prices in Valencia.
Swapping the indoor phone for an identical one is possible if the wiring is respected, but in communal systems a mistake can affect the whole building. If the model is discontinued or the system is digital (VDS, DUOX), it's best handled by a certified technician to guarantee compatibility.
If the fault affects several flats, the origin is usually in shared elements: street panel, power supply or general wiring. In that case the repair is the responsibility of the homeowners' association. We work with communities and property managers throughout Valencia.
